Call of Duty Reaches Highest Steam Player Count in Two Years, Doubling Black Ops 7’s Peak

Following initial skepticism caused by the poor reception of Black Ops 7, fans were hesitant to pick up this year’s Call of Duty entry. However, player sentiment shifted dramatically upon the launch of the Modern Warfare 4 campaign. Earning a 90% positive review score on Steam, the campaign alone peaked at over 100,000 concurrent players, surpassing the peak player count Black Ops 7 maintained over the entire past year.

Driven by that early campaign momentum, expectations for the full release rapidly rose—and today, the game blew past those predictions, surging to a peak of 227,622 concurrent players on Steam.

This marks the highest player count for the franchise on the platform since the launch of Black Ops 6, which peaked at 315,334 players. Furthermore, today’s figure of 227,622 eclipses the peak of the previous Modern Warfare entry, MW3, which topped out at 190,707 players.

It is worth noting that this surge on Steam may also be driven by structural changes in availability. With Call of Duty no longer offered on Xbox Game Pass Day 1, PC players who previously relied on the subscription service may have shifted to purchasing the title directly on Steam.
