Over the past few months, Microsoft overhauled its payout structure by lowering the daily search caps and introducing a temporary 2x daily search promotion. Alongside these adjustments came a dynamic monthly bonus system, allowing users to earn up to 3,500 points based on an unclear algorithm designed to evaluate “legitimate” search activity.
On paper, this structure offered active participants an opportunity to yield higher point totals than under previous daily cap limits. In practice, however, it left monthly earnings entirely at the mercy of an automated bot determining whether a user’s search history was worthy of full payout point totals.
That ambiguity has now culminated in one of the program’s harshest point drops to date. Over the past few days, a flood of reports across the r/MicrosoftRewards community indicates that point projections have plummeted across the board, even for users who strictly adhered to guidelines for months. While rare exceptions exist, such as Reddit user ENNLRon, who managed to increase their earnings, these gains occurred off exceptionally low starting baselines, offering little actual benefit.
Perhaps the post that put this trend into perspective most starkly came from Reddit user Downtown_Bat7013. In their case, their projected payout plummeted from the regional maximum of 3,500 points down to a staggering 50 points, a brutal 98.6% drop. Numerous other community members chimed in with similar stories under the post, reporting severe cuts that routinely exceeded 60% of their standard monthly bonus earnings.
For the vast majority of dedicated users, these reductions have proven severe across every tier of engagement. Other top-tier earners who previously hit maximum regional limits took massive hits, such as Reddit user Shobed, who reported a drop from the 3,500-point cap down to a meager 800. Mid-tier participants experienced similar collapses, with user StylisticPuppy watching their monthly projection crater from a dependable 1,200 points down to just 60.
My own dashboard reflects the exact same trend. After averaging 1,200 points over the previous two months, my current progress bar projects a dismal payout of just 100 points for the upcoming distribution.
For a feature officially branded as the Bing Star Bonus, a payout drop of over 90% leaves dedicated members with almost no incentive to provide legitimate engagement with the platform. Without clear, explicit rules defining what constitutes a “legitimate” search, most users simply won’t bother jumping through hoops for a minuscule monthly payout.
